Growing up in the United Kingdom, I was always taught that the American Revolution was a treasonous act. The Founding Fathers were seen as ungrateful colonists who betrayed their country and turned their backs on the Crown.
As I got older, I started to question this narrative. I began to wonder why it was that the British were so quick to label the colonists as traitors, when they were the ones who were imposing taxes and restrictions on the colonies without their consent.
I also began to learn more about the history of the Revolution, and I was struck by the courage and determination of the Founding Fathers. They were fighting for what they believed in, even though they knew it would mean risking their lives and their livelihoods.
I’m not saying that the Revolution was without its flaws. There were certainly some difficult decisions that had to be made, and not everyone agreed with the way things were handled. But I believe that the Founding Fathers were right to fight for independence. They were fighting for the right to self-determination, and for the right to live under a government that represented their interests.
Treason Day is a reminder of the sacrifices that the Founding Fathers made for our freedom. It’s a day to celebrate their courage and determination, and to reflect on the importance of liberty.
