I’ve been a fan of Sarah Vowell’s writing for years, so when I heard she was releasing a new book about the history of the Mafia, I knew I had to get my hands on it. She’s a gifted storyteller, and I knew she would be able to bring the history of the Mafia to life in a way that was both informative and entertaining.

What I Liked About ‘Take The Cannoli’

Vowell does an excellent job of weaving together the personal stories of the mobsters she writes about with the larger historical context of the Mafia. She’s able to show how the Mafia was both a product of its time and a force that shaped the world around it. I also appreciate the way she doesn’t shy away from the dark side of the Mafia. She talks about the violence, the corruption, and the exploitation that were all part of the Mafia’s history. But she also shows how the Mafia was able to provide a sense of community and protection for its members.

What I Didn’t Like About ‘Take The Cannoli’

One thing I didn’t like about ‘Take The Cannoli’ was that it was sometimes hard to follow. Vowell jumps around in time a lot, and it can be difficult to keep track of who’s who and what’s going on. I also thought the book could have been a little more concise. It’s over 500 pages long, and it could have easily been trimmed down by a hundred or so pages.

Overall

Despite its flaws, I enjoyed ‘Take The Cannoli’. It’s a fascinating and well-written book that provides a unique perspective on the history of the Mafia. I would recommend it to anyone who is interested in organized crime or American history.
