John Steinbeck’s Sea of Cortez: A Personal Voyage

The Sea of Cortez: John Steinbeck’s Great American Odyssey

In 1940, John Steinbeck and marine biologist Ed Ricketts set out on a journey to the Sea of Cortez, a vast body of water that lies between the Baja California peninsula and mainland Mexico. The trip was ostensibly a scientific expedition, but it would also become a transformative experience for Steinbeck, who would draw on his observations and experiences in the Sea of Cortez for his classic novel The Log from the Sea of Cortez.

In this article, I will explore the significance of the Sea of Cortez in Steinbeck’s life and work. I will discuss the expedition itself, the impact it had on Steinbeck’s writing, and the enduring legacy of his work on the Sea of Cortez.

I will also argue that the Sea of Cortez is more than just a backdrop for Steinbeck’s novel. It is a character in its own right, a place of beauty, mystery, and danger. It is a place where Steinbeck found inspiration, challenged his preconceptions, and ultimately came to a deeper understanding of himself and the world around him.
