Why a Polaris Sportsman Starter Relay is Necessary

I have a Polaris Sportsman 570 ATV, and I recently had an issue with the starter relay. The starter relay is a small electrical component that is responsible for sending power from the battery to the starter motor. When the starter relay fails, it can prevent the starter motor from turning over the engine.

There are a few reasons why a Polaris Sportsman starter relay might fail. One common cause is corrosion. The starter relay is located in a very humid environment, and over time, the contacts can become corroded. This can prevent the relay from making a good connection, which will prevent the starter motor from turning over.

Another common cause of starter relay failure is a bad ground. The starter relay needs a good ground in order to function properly. If the ground connection is loose or corroded, it can prevent the relay from sending power to the starter motor.

Finally, a starter relay can also fail due to a faulty electrical connection. If the wiring to the starter relay is damaged or corroded, it can prevent the relay from functioning properly.

If you suspect that your Polaris Sportsman starter relay is failing, there are a few things you can do to check it. First, you can visually inspect the relay for signs of corrosion or damage. You can also check the wiring to the relay for any damage or corrosion. If you see any damage, you will need to replace the starter relay.

If you don’t see any damage, you can try to test the relay with a multimeter. To do this, you will need to disconnect the starter relay from the wiring harness. Then, you will need to set your multimeter to the ohms setting. Next, you will need to connect the positive lead of the multimeter to the “S” terminal on the relay. Finally, you will need to connect the negative lead of the multimeter to the “B” terminal on the relay. If the multimeter shows a reading of zero ohms, the relay is good. If the multimeter shows a reading of infinity ohms, the relay is bad and needs to be replaced.

Replacing a Polaris Sportsman starter relay is a relatively simple task. However, if you are not comfortable working on electrical components, it is best to have a qualified technician do the work for you.

Here are a few tips for preventing starter relay failure:

  • Keep the starter relay clean and free of corrosion.
  • Make sure the starter relay has a good ground.
  • Check the wiring to the starter relay regularly for damage or corrosion.
  • If you suspect that the starter relay is failing, have it tested or replaced by a qualified technician.
