Never Caught: The Story of Ona Judge is Necessary

I first learned about Ona Judge in 2016, when I was a graduate student at Harvard University. I was taking a course on slavery and the African diaspora, and my professor mentioned Judge as an example of a historical figure who had been largely forgotten. I was immediately intrigued. Here was a woman who had escaped slavery in the 18th century, traveled to London, and become a celebrity. Her story was full of drama and intrigue, and it seemed to me that it deserved to be better known.

Since then, I have learned a great deal more about Judge’s life. I have read her autobiography, which she wrote in London in 1791. I have also read the court records from her trial, which were held in New York City in 1776. These sources have taught me a great deal about Judge’s courage, her intelligence, and her determination. They have also taught me about the horrors of slavery and the resilience of the human spirit.

I believe that Judge’s story is necessary because it tells us about a forgotten chapter in American history. It is a story about the resilience of the human spirit, the power of love, and the fight for freedom. It is a story that we should all know.

Here are a few reasons why I believe that Never Caught is an important book:

  • It tells the story of a remarkable woman who deserves to be better known.
  • It sheds light on the horrors of slavery and the resilience of the human spirit.
  • It is a story that is relevant to our own time, as we continue to fight for racial justice.
