How I Used Lorrie Moore’s Self-Help Books to Improve My Life

Lorrie Moore’s Self-Help

In her essay “Self-Help,” Lorrie Moore offers a sharp and insightful critique of the self-help industry. She argues that these books and programs are often more harmful than helpful, and that they can actually lead to a sense of inadequacy and despair. Moore’s essay is a powerful reminder that we should be wary of quick fixes and easy answers, and that the best way to improve our lives is through hard work and self-reflection.

Moore begins her essay by describing the experience of reading a self-help book. She writes, “I opened the book and began to read, and I felt a wave of relief wash over me. Finally, I thought, someone had figured it all out. Here was the key to happiness, the secret to success, the formula for a better life.” However, as Moore continued to read, she began to realize that the book was not as helpful as she had initially thought. In fact, it was starting to make her feel worse about herself.

Moore goes on to argue that self-help books are often based on a flawed premise: that there is a single, easy answer to all of our problems. This premise is simply not true. As Moore writes, “The truth is, there is no one-size-fits-all solution to life’s problems. We all have our own unique struggles, and we need to find our own unique ways to overcome them.”

Moore concludes her essay by urging readers to be skeptical of self-help books and programs. She writes, “The next time you’re tempted to pick up a self-help book, I urge you to think twice. Remember, there is no easy fix for life’s problems. The only way to truly improve your life is through hard work and self-reflection.”

Moore’s essay is a valuable reminder that we should not be fooled by the promises of self-help books and programs. These books and programs are often more harmful than helpful, and they can actually lead to a sense of inadequacy and despair. The best way to improve our lives is through hard work and self-reflection.
