As a Black child growing up in the 1980s, I never saw a Santa Claus who looked like me. All of the Santas in stores and in movies were white. This made me feel like I didn’t belong, like Santa didn’t love me as much as he loved white children.
As I got older, I realized that this was a problem with society as a whole. Black children were constantly being told that they were not good enough, that they couldn’t be successful, that they couldn’t be Santa Claus. This is a harmful message that has lasting consequences.
That’s why I believe that it is so important to have life-size African American Santas. Seeing a Santa who looks like me tells me that I am loved and accepted, that I can be anything I want to be, that I can even be Santa Claus.
