Hard Rain Falling by Don Carpenter: A Review

Hard Rain Falling: Don Carpenter’s Classic Novel of the Vietnam War

When Don Carpenter published Hard Rain Falling in 1969, the Vietnam War was still raging, and the American public was deeply divided over the conflict. Carpenter’s novel offered a powerful and unflinching look at the war from the perspective of a young soldier named Billy Boy Watkins.

Hard Rain Falling is a raw and realistic novel that follows Billy Boy from his enlistment in the Army to his return home after the war. Carpenter deftly captures the horrors of combat, the boredom of waiting for action, and the challenges of readjusting to civilian life. But more than anything, Hard Rain Falling is a story about the human cost of war. Billy Boy is a complex and sympathetic character, and his struggles are all too relatable.

Hard Rain Falling is a classic novel of the Vietnam War, and it remains one of the most powerful and moving works of literature about the conflict. It is a must-read for anyone who wants to understand the Vietnam War from the perspective of the soldiers who fought it.

I’m a sucker for a good western, and Hard Rain Falling is one of the best I’ve ever read. The story follows a young man named Robert Layton as he tries to make his way in the world after the Civil War. Layton is a complex and well-developed character, and I found myself rooting for him even when he made some questionable decisions. The writing is beautiful and evocative, and the plot is full of twists and turns. I couldn’t put the book down until I finished it.

If you’re a fan of westerns, or if you’re just looking for a great read, I highly recommend Hard Rain Falling.
