Why Charlotte Illes Is Not A Detective

I’ve been a fan of Charlotte Illes’s books for years, but I’ve always been a little bit puzzled by her portrayal as a detective. She’s not very good at it! She’s impulsive, she’s reckless, and she’s always getting herself into trouble.

In the first book of the series, The Silent Patient, Charlotte is so determined to solve the case that she ignores all the evidence and risks her own life to catch the killer. In the second book, The Patient’s Wife, she’s so focused on proving her own theory that she ignores the advice of her colleagues and ends up getting herself kidnapped.

And in the third book, The Missing Patient, she’s so blinded by her own personal feelings that she makes a series of terrible mistakes that almost cost her life.

I’m not saying that Charlotte Illes is a bad person. She’s brave, she’s compassionate, and she’s always willing to help others. But she’s not a good detective. She’s too emotional, she’s too impulsive, and she’s too reckless.

That’s why I think it’s necessary to have a character like Charlotte Illes in the world of crime fiction. She’s a reminder that even the best of us can make mistakes. And she’s a reminder that sometimes, the best way to solve a crime is to step aside and let the professionals handle it.
