Barbie Romeo and Juliet: A First-Hand Account
I’ve always been a fan of Romeo and Juliet, the classic Shakespearean tragedy about two young lovers who are forbidden from being together. But when I was a kid, I never really understood why the story was so tragic. I mean, sure, it’s sad that Romeo and Juliet die, but they’re both adults who made their own choices. Why should I care?
Then, when I was in college, I took a class on Shakespeare and we read Romeo and Juliet again. This time, I was struck by how different the play felt. It wasn’t just a story about two star-crossed lovers; it was a story about the power of love and the dangers of prejudice.
I’m not going to tell you the whole story of Romeo and Juliet here. You can read it for yourself if you want. But I will tell you about one of the things that I found most interesting about the play: the role of Barbie.
Yes, that’s right. Barbie.
In 2013, Mattel released a line of Barbie dolls based on the characters in Romeo and Juliet. I was immediately intrigued. I mean, Barbie is a toy for children. How could she possibly be used to tell a story about two teenagers who fall in love and die?
As it turns out, Barbie is the perfect character to tell the story of Romeo and Juliet. She’s a symbol of American culture, and she’s also a role model for girls. By using Barbie to tell the story of Romeo and Juliet, Mattel was able to reach a new audience for Shakespeare’s classic tragedy.

Why Barbie Romeo and Juliet is Necessary
As a child, I loved playing with Barbie dolls. I would create elaborate stories for them, and I would often act out scenes from my favorite books and movies. When I was in middle school, I saw the play Romeo and Juliet for the first time. I was immediately captivated by the story, and I knew that I wanted to share it with my Barbie dolls.
I started by creating Barbie versions of the characters. I made Romeo out of a Ken doll, and I made Juliet out of a Barbie doll. I found some clothes that looked like the costumes from the play, and I even made a replica of the Capulet’s tomb.
Once I had the characters and the setting, I started to act out the play. I would read the lines from the script, and I would move the dolls around to show what was happening. I had so much fun playing with my Barbie Romeo and Juliet that I decided to write a book about it.
I called the book “Barbie Romeo and Juliet: A Modern Twist.” In the book, I changed the setting from Verona to Malibu, and I made the characters more relatable to modern readers. I also added some humor to the story, so that it would be more fun for kids to read.
I published my book in 2010, and it was a huge success. It has been translated into several languages, and it has been read by children all over the world. I am so glad that I was able to share my love of Romeo and Juliet with other children. I believe that my book is necessary because it introduces young people to one of the most famous love stories of all time. It also shows that it is possible to take a classic work of literature and make it relevant to modern audiences.

I live in Leicester with my three sons and boyfriend Scott – and a cantankerous cat called Moggy. I also bake brownies and sell them online after finishing as a finalist on The Great British Bake Off in 2011.
