As a Black woman, I have always loved Barbie dolls. They were my first representation of beauty and possibility. I would spend hours playing with my Barbies, imagining all the different lives they could lead. But one thing I never saw was a Barbie doll with dreads.
Dreads are a natural hairstyle for many Black people, and yet they are rarely represented in mainstream media. This lack of representation sends a message to Black girls that they are not beautiful or worthy of being represented. It also reinforces the idea that white beauty is the only beauty that is valued.
