How to Fix Pending Validation in AWS Certificate Manager

Aws Certificate Manager Pending Validation: What It Is and How to Fix It

When you’re trying to get a new website up and running, one of the first things you need to do is get a SSL certificate. This is a small file that tells browsers that your website is secure and that they can trust it with their data.

But what happens if your AWS Certificate Manager pending validation? This can happen for a number of reasons, but it usually means that there’s something wrong with your domain name or your certificate request.

In this article, I’ll explain what AWS Certificate Manager pending validation is, why it happens, and how to fix it.

What is AWS Certificate Manager pending validation?

AWS Certificate Manager is a service that lets you easily manage SSL certificates for your AWS resources. When you create a new certificate request, it will go into a pending validation state. This means that AWS is still verifying that you own the domain name that you’re requesting the certificate for.

Why does AWS Certificate Manager pending validation happen?

There are a few reasons why AWS Certificate Manager pending validation might happen. Here are the most common ones:

  • You entered the wrong domain name. When you create a certificate request, you need to enter the exact domain name that you want to secure. If you make a mistake, AWS won’t be able to verify that you own the domain name and your request will be stuck in pending validation.
  • Your domain name is not properly configured. In order for AWS to verify that you own a domain name, you need to have a DNS record set up that points to your AWS load balancer. If you don’t have this record set up, AWS won’t be able to verify your domain name and your request will be stuck in pending validation.
  • Your certificate request is expired. Certificate requests have a limited lifespan. If your request expires, you’ll need to create a new one.

How to fix AWS Certificate Manager pending validation

If your AWS Certificate Manager pending validation, there are a few things you can do to fix it. Here’s what to do:

1. Check the domain name that you entered. Make sure that you entered the correct domain name when you created your certificate request.
2. Check your DNS records. Make sure that you have a DNS record set up that points to your AWS load balancer.
3. Renew your certificate request. If your certificate request has expired, you’ll need to create a new one.

Once you’ve fixed the issue that caused your AWS Certificate Manager pending validation, your request will be approved and you’ll be able to use your SSL certificate.

**Why is AWS Certificate Manager Pending Validation necessary?**

When you create a certificate with AWS Certificate Manager (ACM), you have the option to choose between “Pending Validation” and “Auto-Renewal”. Pending Validation is the default option, and it’s a good choice for most users. Here are a few reasons why:

* **It’s more secure.** With Pending Validation, your certificate is not issued until you’ve verified the ownership of your domain. This helps to protect your website from being hijacked by attackers.
* **It’s more flexible.** With Pending Validation, you can choose to renew your certificate at any time. This gives you the flexibility to change your domain name or hosting provider without having to worry about your certificate expiring.
* **It’s more cost-effective.** Pending Validation is the least expensive option for renewing your certificates.

If you’re not sure whether Pending Validation is right for you, you can always choose Auto-Renewal. With Auto-Renewal, your certificate will be renewed automatically every year, so you don’t have to worry about it.

Here are the steps to create a certificate with AWS Certificate Manager:

1. Go to the AWS Certificate Manager console.
2. Click **Create Certificate**.
3. Enter the domain name for your website.
4. Choose **Pending Validation**.
5. Click **Create Certificate**.

AWS Certificate Manager will send an email to the contact email address you specified. The email will contain a link to verify your domain ownership. Once you’ve verified your domain ownership, your certificate will be issued.

You can view your certificates in the AWS Certificate Manager console. To do this, click **Certificates** in the navigation bar. You can also view your certificates in the AWS Management Console. To do this, click **Services** > Certificate Manager.

My Buying Guides on ‘Aws Certificate Manager Pending Validation’

When you purchase a certificate from AWS Certificate Manager (ACM), the certificate is initially in the Pending Validation state. This means that ACM has not yet received confirmation from the certificate authority (CA) that the domain name you specified is valid.

There are two ways to validate your domain name:

  • DNS validation: This is the default validation method. ACM sends a DNS record to the DNS server for your domain name. You then need to verify that the record has been added correctly.
  • Email validation: ACM sends an email to the email address you specified when you created the certificate. You then need to click on a link in the email to verify your domain name.

Once ACM has received confirmation from the CA that your domain name is valid, the certificate will be updated to the Active state.

Pending Validation Status

You can check the status of your certificate in the AWS Certificate Manager console. To do this, follow these steps:

1. Open the AWS Certificate Manager console.
2. In the Certificates list, select the certificate you want to check.
3. In the Status column, you will see the status of the certificate.

The following table describes the different status values that you may see for a certificate:

| Status | Description |
|—|—|
| Pending Validation | The certificate is in the process of being validated. |
| Issued | The certificate has been validated and is ready to use. |
| Expired | The certificate has expired and is no longer valid. |
| Revoked | The certificate has been revoked and is no longer valid. |

Troubleshooting Pending Validation

If your certificate is stuck in the Pending Validation state, there are a few things you can check:

  • Make sure that you have entered the correct domain name when you created the certificate.
  • Make sure that the DNS record for your domain name has been added correctly.
  • Make sure that you have clicked on the link in the email that ACM sent you to verify your domain name.

If you have checked all of these things and your certificate is still stuck in the Pending Validation state, you can contact AWS Support for help.

AWS Certificate Manager makes it easy to manage your SSL/TLS certificates. By following the steps in this guide, you can quickly and easily validate your domain name and get your certificate into the Active state.
